Summer Styling With Yana Hussin

I wrote this for the lifestyle section of The Sun newspaper but it never got picked up. I don't want it to go to waste so I'm sharing this here.

Stylist to the stars, Yana Hussin discusses summer’s hottest trends for 2017 and how to wear them without losing ones’ personal style sensibility. Fashion evolves and it is ever-changing.

With the turning of a new season, we decide on what’s in and what’s not. Clothes are worn differently and everybody looks for inspiration from what is happening on the runways and even within the street-style scene across the globe. Yana Hussin is one of the local fashion insiders who keeps her eyes opened towards all these updates and new trends. It is part of her job as a stylist to the stars. Known for her works with Malaysia's biggest names like Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza, Stacy and Shila Amzah, Yana is currently reviewing all the hottest summer styles and trends for her A-list clients.

"On top of what is happening on the runway of international designers, I believe summer look should always be loose and flowy. It gives an instant relaxed vibe suitable for comfort and movement under the hot weather," explains Yana.

The loose silhouette combined with floral print is huge this season. Seen on the runway of Chloe and Erdem, floral is worn to make bold statement from head to toe with a lot of billowy ruffles. There is a very prominent Seventies influence in the print with bright colours like orange, pink and red. “Floral has always been a summer staple but this season, we are taking it up a notch and going in full swing. There is no such thing as too much floral this season,” says Yana.

According to Yana, Nineties trends have been making comeback in the recent years but this summer the Eighties is taking over. Think beyond punk tees and fishnet tights because this time around, the Eighties is crawling back into the closet of fashion It girls in the form of eveningwear and glamorous going-out outfits. Rodarte sent down its model in metallic red look with poufy shoulders that look like they were borrowed from young Debbie Gibson. Saint Laurent is all about black leather dresses so short they give illusion of legs that seem never-ending. Strong shoulder, metallic and a whole lot of legs are what The New Eighties is all about.

The award-winning stylist is also a huge fan of Alessandro Michele’s eccentric ‘mix & match’ looks at Gucci. “The mix of bold colours, playful silhouette and heavy accessories is perfect for summer. It is also a great way to showcase individual fashion personality. Oversized Seventies tinted shades and statement wedges are two must-have accessories to complete just about any ‘mix &match’ look for Spring 2017,” says Yana who also designs her own shoe line called AnnayDean.

Summer is always the best season for us who live in tropical country like Malaysia as all the looks and trends are more accessible and easily adaptable to fit all different occasions. “For those who are not too keen on wearing too much of prints and heavy accessories, they can keep it simple yet fashionable with white shirt that goes with everything. Stripe is another alternative. It has summer vibes written all over it but in lesser adventurous form compared to the previously mentioned floral,” says Yana.

Yana who has more than 10 years of experience in fashion believes that summer dressing should be a perfect balance of style and functionality. This is what she has been incorporating in her works with her celebrity clients. “We can always get inspiration from designers or what trendy people of social media are wearing but at the end of the day we have to find something that works best for us and just stick with it,” explains Yana.
